He asks parents not just to love and accept their gay children, but to speak out on their behalf. (In our San Diego Library)
A Mother/Daughter Journey
by Betty DeGeneres Ellen DeGeneres's mom speaks out in LOVE, ELLEN, and it's a fascinating -- and true -- story.
Betty DeGeneres's book is sure to hit bestseller lists and stir up feelings in parents and their gay children. The most important part of the book for those of us who are "family" has got to be the time that Ellen and her mother walked along a beach in Mississippi and daughter turned to mother and said, "Mom, I'm gay." Don't miss this interesting glimpse of one of the great gay comedians and performers, through her mother's eyes.

Serving in Silence
by Margarethe Cammermeyer, Read by Lee Meriwether
Notwithstanding her Bronze Star for duty in Vietnam, her award as Nurse of the Year by the VA, and her role as Chief Nurse of the Washington National Guard, Cammermeyer's distinguished medical career was cut short by her abrupt dismissal in 1992. The basis of her firing from lifelong military service? Sexual orientation. This important book provides a fresh view of the military, and of the overarching injustice of the Pentagon's stand on gay and lesbian personnel

Lesbian and Gay Writers Recall Seventh Grade
by Clifford Chase (ed.)
Gym class, group showers, zits, band practice, drama club, birth of pubic hair, pranks, secrets, spin the bottle, voice changes, bullies, sissies, friendship, enemyship -- what's not to love about turning 13? For a gay child, it may be traumatic, but it also carries a richness of observed detail of small but important moments, turning points of sorts.
The Best Little Boy in the World Grows Up
by Andrew Tobias
Andrew Tobias, no longer known as John Reid, isn't the boy he used to be. He's no longer THE BEST LITTLE BOY IN THE WORLD -- as he's the first to point out in his eagerly awaited follow-up titled, appropriately enough, THE BEST LITTLE BOY IN THE WORLD GROWS UP. Financial guru Tobias takes a break from his writings on investing to give the world an insightful look at what has become of the teen that a generation of gay men grew up identifying with.
Family Outing
by Chastity Bono, Billie Fitzpatrick
Why would the gay community out one of its own? Ask Chastity Bono, who suffered that unexpected invasion of privacy when someone in the gay press decided to make it public that the daughter of conservative Sonny Bono and gay male icon Cher was, in fact, a lesbian. But this book is so much more than Chastity's story alone; it's all our stories, and Bono explores through the book ways of reconnecting to family as well as to our community.
And Say Hi to Joyce The Life and Chronicles of a Lesbian Couple
by Deb Price, Joyce Murdoch
This collection of newspaper essays from syndicated columnist Deb Price details her life with Joyce Murdoch, another journalist. Great reporting and greater insights into the lives of two women make this book a standout.
And the Band Played On
by Randy Shilts
An important, groundbreaking book, this seminal history takes a hard look at the first years of the AIDS crisis. Shilts tracks the progression not only of the disease but also of the public's awareness of what was originally known as "the gay cancer."
The Gay 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Gay Men and Lesbians, Past and Present
by Paul Elliott Russell
From Socrates and Sappho to Madonna and activist/journalist Michelangelo Signorile, this listing profiles those who have profoundly shaped gay and lesbian culture-and culture in general: the Amazons, 14th-century Persian poet Hafiz, Proust, Michel Foucault, professional provocateur Quentin Crisp and so on. Aside from an equivocal portrait of Rock Hudson, Russell (The Salt Point) omits figures whose undeniable influence was less benign, a strategy that misfires. Sigmund Freud, who wrote extensively about sexuality, is out, but Magnus Hirschfeld and Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, two obscure homophilic contemporaries of his, are in. Yet quibbling with the choices here-why Holly Near but not k.d. lang, the Patrons of Stonewall but not the Daughters of Bilitis?-is as pleasurable as reading Rusell's incisive essays.
