SUPPORT GROUPS

PFLAG holds monthly meetings, generally with a short educational program after the support group. Support groups provide a safe, friendly place where, in small groups, parents can voice their concerns about homosexuality.

Similarly, gay people can speak of their efforts and experiences in seeking parental understanding and acceptance.

Our educational program consists of a diverse group of guest speakers and videos.

The church is located across the street from the UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. While the address is 4190 Front Street, it is not visible or accessible from that street!

From Interstate 8, take highway 163 Southbound, Washington Street exit, and proceed as directions above.

From Interstate 5, take Washington Street exit. Look for a Jack in the Box on the left, and one block past that, turn left onto First Avenue. Proceed three blocks. Turn left onto Arbor Street. The UCSD Medical Center will be on your right. My first PFLAG Experience  - PFLAG Orange County

All of the guilt and suffering I experienced in accepting my daughter, I felt just as acutely in coming out and accepting myself as a valid human being, instead of a worthless, mutated perversion in society.

You have no idea what it was like for me to walk into that PFLAG meeting. I've never been to any sort of support group before, and I was frightened and nervous. I had chosen a seat in the back of the room, so I had plenty of time to listen to everyone introduce themselves. Then it was my turn, and after repeatedly trying to swallow my Adam's apple, I finally managed to sputter out a brief description. You know what happened next? the person next to me began to speak, and all eyes went to her. The world did not end. I was not harassed, belittled or degraded, as many years of personal experience led me to expect. I did not shrivel and die.

After the group was about halfway through the sharing session, it dawned on me that for this time in my life, I was in an environment based on 100% unquestioning acceptance. I was awe struck, overwhelmed and almost in shock. After years of being in prison, the warden suddenly opened the door of the gate, saying the prisoner was free to go. And the prisoner stood at the cell, unable to immediately comprehend exactly what this meant.

I now have a vested, personal interest in the well being of this organization, understanding what its' existence can mean to others.

It may not be this difficult for you as this mom but, even if it is, PFLAG support groups do help. Please come to your local chapter meeting. For the closest chapter to you click here  www.pflag.org
