DESCRIPTION

The San Diego County Chapter of Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG/SAN DIEGO) will award three scholarships of $1,000.00 each: the the John Bessemer Memorial Scholarship, the Don Mormon Memorial Scholarship and the Mary Wagner Memorial Scholarship to three bisexual, transgender, lesbian or gay students planning to attend a post-secondary educational institution in the Fall of 2004 or currently attending such an institution.

PURPOSE OF AWARD

  • To recognize outstanding lesbian, bisexual, transgender and gay youth from the community especially for their involvement in the gay community and/or society.
  • To encourage post-secondary education of bisexual, transgender, lesbian or gay persons
  • To promote a positive image of bisexual, transgender, lesbian or gay persons in society.

ELIGIBILTY

  • Be a bisexual, transgender, lesbian or gay student.
  • Plan to register to attend in the Fall, 2004, or currently attending a post-secondary educational institution.
  • Submit an application with required supporting materials.
  • Be present at San Diego PFLAG awards event Monday, May 24, 2004, to accept scholarship.

TERMS

Cash awards will be paid to the institution of higher learning. Awards are valid for one academic year, Fall, 2004 through Summer, 2005. Awardees are expected to be full-time students. The scholarships are not necessarily continuous.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION OF APPLICANTS:

  • Affirmation of one's lesbian, bisexual, transgender or gay identity.
  • Participation and leadership in community activities.
  • Determination and potential to achieve goals.
  • Demonstration of financial need.
All Information is strictly confidential

REQUIRED SUPPORTING MATERIALS

  • ACT/SAT scores (for students planning to attend a 4 year institution)
  • High school transcript (for graduating high school students)
  • Grade transcripts (for currently enrolled college school students)
  • Two letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, advisors
  • Completed application and essay
